CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
This chapter consists of background, research question, research objective,
and significances.
1.1. Background
Movie is media that entertain people by story
that present. Each movie has point that will make the audience interest to
watch it. There are some genres of movie, such as; action, adventure, comedy,
romantic, horror, fiction, animation and else. A movie can have more than one genre.
It depends on the story that present in that movie.
Most people prefer to watch movie than read novel, because movie is an
entertainment that show story by visualization. The audience can see the
characters, the place and also the action. It is different if they read a story
in novel, they should imagine because they do not see directly the story that is presented. That is the reason why most
people choose watch movie than read a novel.
Movie is an audio-visual media, because movie
tells the story with sound and also video. It will make the audience understand
easily about the story of movie. They will know what is the aim that movie try
to tell them. The audience interest to the movie if they think the story is
interesting.
Sherlock
is a detective movie that adopted from the novel by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
This is a movie that tells daily life of a detective that named Sherlock
Holmes. Detective is one of those who have intelligence above average. The way he thinks is quicker and wider than the others. There are many messages in this film.
Detective movie is not a movie that is easy
to understand.
Quoted
from Wikipedia, Sherlock is a British television crime drama that presents a contemporary adaptation of Sir
Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes detective stories. Created by Steven
Moffat
and Mark Gatiss, it stars Benedict
Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as Doctor John Watson. Nine
episodes
have been produced, the first three of which were broadcast in 2010. Series two
was broadcast in 2012, and a third series was broadcast in 2014. The series is
primarily filmed in Cardiff, Wales. North
Gower Street in London is used for exterior shots of Holmes and
Watson's 221B Baker Street residence.
On this movie the researcher is interested in
characterization of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson. Sherlock
proud to show-off his ability; he will enjoy when people praise his intellect,
and he takes pleasure in proving that he is more clever than the other people.
He feels threatened when his position of intellectual superiority is in danger
of being toppled. He dislikes when people try to change him or tell him what to
do. Sherlock’s
relationship with John Watson is also interesting. John is one of people that
have complimented Sherlock’s abilities. John becomes Sherlock’s best friend.
They try to break the case together.
Quoted from Raven (2014:2) the
reason why Sherlock often arrogantly shows off his intellectual power is
because he is actually insecure; he believes his intelligence is his only good
quality, and he puts a lot of emphasis on that particular trait. Sherlock
himself may not be aware of his insecurities; in fact, one of Sherlock’s
weakest points is that he is accurately aware of everything but himself. His
perception of himself seems to be rather skewed; he does not believe in
himself, rather, he believes in a caricature of himself: a heartless, cold,
logical, deduction machine, instead of a human being.
Based
on the explanation above, the researcher are interested to analyze the major
character in Sherlock
movie. So, this research is conducted entitled Analysis on
Major Character in
Sherlock Movie.
1.2.Research Question
Based on the background above, the research question of
this research is how is the conflict on the major character in Sherlock Movie?
1.3. Research Objective
The research objective is to describe the conflict on the Major character in Sherlock Movie. The major character is
Sherlock Holmes.
1.4.Significances
The significance of this
research consists of two, they are
Theoretically
The result of this research
will be helpful for the researcher to understand how to analyze a movie. This research
could develop knowledge in analyzing movie about conflict on major character.
Furthermore, this research is expected as reference for further study about conflict
analysis in a movie.
Practically
The research is expected to
serve as a discussion in adding to the diversity of understanding of the conflict in a movie. It will help the reader get deeply understanding about
conflict analysis.
CHAPTER II
THEORETICAL REVIEW
This chapter discusses about some theories that are related to this research such as concept of movie and concept of visual
rhetoric.
2.1 Definition Of Movie
Movie is the
copyrighted work of art and culture. It is a communication
media that contain audio visual, that is created based on the principles of cinematography with recorded on celluloid, video tapes, video discs, and/or materials other technology inventions in all forms, types, and sizes through the process chemical, electronic process, or other process, with or without sound, which can be displayed and/or aired by mechanical projection systems, electronics, and/orother.
(UU No.8 1992 about Film).
Movie is created by photographing actual scenes with a motion picture camera by photographing drawings
or miniature models using traditional animation techniques by means of CGI
(computer generated imagery) and computer animation or by a combination of some
or all of these techniques and other visual effects. The process of movie
making is both an art and an industry.
As cited in Ancheta (2007)
a movie is a series of messages being sent to an audience, and the success of
any film is determined by the way these messages get across. The audience may
not even be aware of it, but they are only intrigued, moved and informed
because of the rhetorical arguments used to deliver these messages. They receive them through
lighting, dialogue, camera angles, music, etc. and although they rarely analyze
these details, they, even more than plots, establish the stories they grow to
love.
2.2 Genres of Movie
Movie has some genres , they are action, adventure, comedies,
crimes, drama, epics, horror, musical, sci-fi, war and western. (Tuzahra. 2011)
Action films usually include high energy, big-budget
physical stunts and chases, possibly with rescues, battles, fights, escapes,
destructive crises (floods, explosions, natural disasters, fires, etc.),
non-stop motion, spectacular rhythm and pacing, and adventurous, often
two-dimensional 'good-guy' heroes (or recently, heroines) battling 'bad guys' -
all designed for pure audience escapism. Includes the James Bond 'fantasy'
spy/espionage series, martial arts films. A major sub-genre is the disaster
film.
Adventure films are usually exciting stories, with new
experiences or exotic locales, very similar to or often paired with the action
film genre. They can include traditional swashbucklers, serialized films, and
historical spectacles (similar to the epics film genre), searches or
expeditions for lost continents, "jungle" and "desert"
epics, treasure hunts, disaster films, or searches for the unknown.
Comedies are light-hearted plots consistently and
deliberately designed to amuse and provoke laughter (with one-liners, jokes,
etc.) by exaggerating the situation, the language, action, relationships and
characters. This section describes various forms of comedy through cinematic
history, including slapstick, screwball, spoofs and parodies, romantic
comedies, black comedy (dark satirical comedy), and more.
Crime (gangster) films are developed around the
sinister actions of criminals or mobsters, particularly bank robbers,
underworld figures, or ruthless hoodlums who operate outside the law, stealing
and murdering their way through life. Criminal and gangster films are often
categorized as film noir or detective-mystery films - because of underlying
similarities between these cinematic forms.
Dramas are serious, plot-driven presentations,
portraying realistic characters, settings, life situations, and stories
involving intense character development and interaction. Usually, they are not
focused on special-effects, comedy, or action, Dramatic films are probably the
largest film genre, with many subsets. Dramatic biographical films (or
"biopics") are a major sub-genre, as are 'adult' films (with mature
subject content).
Epics include costume dramas, historical dramas,
war films, medieval romps, or 'period pictures' that often cover a large
expanse of time set against a vast, panoramic backdrop. Epics often share
elements of the elaborate adventure films genre. Epics take an historical or
imagined event, mythic, legendary, or heroic figure, and add an extravagant
setting and lavish costumes, accompanied by grandeur and spectacle, dramatic
scope, high production values, and a sweeping musical score.
Horror films are designed to frighten and to invoke
our hidden worst fears, often in a terrifying, shocking finale, while
captivating and entertaining us at the same time in a cathartic experience.
Horror films feature a wide range of styles, from the earliest silent Nosferatu
classic, to today's CGI monsters and deranged humans. They are often combined
with science fiction when the menace or monster is related to a corruption of
technology, or when Earth is threatened by aliens. The fantasy and supernatural
film genres are not usually synonymous with the horror genre. There are many
sub-genres of horror: slasher, teen terror, serial killers, satanic, Dracula,
Frankenstein, etc.
Musical/dance films are cinematic forms that emphasize
full-scale scores or song and dance routines in a significant way, or they are
films that are centered on combinations of music, dance, song or choreography.
Major subgenres include the musical comedy or the concert film.
Sci-fi films are often quasi-scientific, visionary
and imaginative - complete with heroes, aliens, distant planets, impossible
quests, improbable settings, fantastic places, great dark and shadowy villains,
futuristic technology, unknown and unknowable forces, and extraordinary
monsters ('things or creatures from space'), either created by mad scientists
or by nuclear havoc. They are sometimes an offshoot of fantasy films, or they
share some similarities with action/adventure films.
War films acknowledge the horror and heartbreak
of war, letting the actual combat fighting (against nations or humankind) on
land, sea, or in the air provide the primary plot or background for the action
of the film. War films are often paired with other genres, such as action,
adventure, drama, romance, comedy (black), suspense, and even epics and
westerns, and they often take a denunciatory approach toward warfare. They may
include POW tales, stories of military operations, and training.
Westerns are the major defining genre of the American
film industry - a eulogy to the early days of the expansive American frontier.
They are one of the oldest, most enduring genres with very recognizable plots,
elements, and characters (six-guns, horses, dusty towns and trails, cowboys,
Indians, etc.). Over time, westerns have been re-defined, re-invented and
expanded, dismissed, re-discovered, and spoofed.
2.3 Elements Of Movie
There
are some elements of a movie namely :
2.3.1
Character And characterization.
According to Tarigain (1961) as
cited in mohamad (2014) in studying the character, there are some characters
that will be found in the movie. Character divided into two types based on the
function of characters’, namely major character and minor character. Major
character is the most important character in a story. A story is about this
character, but he/she can not stand in his/her own, he/she needs others
characters to make the story interesting. Meanwhile, minor character is
character of less important than those of the major character (Tarigan, 1961,
p.67). characterization is the author’s presentation and development of
character. In this research, the major character that will be analyzed is
Sherlock movie.
2.3.2
Plot
Plot is a literary term defined as the events that make
up a story, every plot is made of series of incidents that are related to one
another. Conflict, a struggle of some kind, is the most important element of
plot, conflict maybe internal or external, and there may be more than one form
of conflict in a work.
2.3.3
Setting
Setting is element of fiction reveals the where and when
it occur of the event. Setting includes several closely related aspect of a
work of fiction. First, it is the setting of the time, and the second it is the
setting of the place.
2.3.4
Point of view
Point of view is the
particular vantage point from which a
story told, but usually either first person. Point of view refers to the
perspective from which a story told identify the narrator.
2.3.5
Theme
Theme is the point or the
idea of the story. Theme is related to the other elements of fiction more as
consequence than as parallel element hat can be separately identified.
2.4 Conflict
As cited in Winata (2011) the word conflict is taken from
Latin word ” contra” meaning to strike. So, conflict is an art of tricking
together group. Conflicts is the strain in a made up story or drama by which it
is the opposition of two forces (Sujiman, 1984:57).
Conflict has the main role in a literary works, especially
in a movie. One of the well definitions of conflict
is as stated by Edgar V. Roberts(in Bangun, 2007) “The opposition between two characters,
between large groups of people, or between protagonists and larger forces such
as natural objects, ideas, modes of behavior, public opinion, and the like.
Conflict may also be internal and psychological, involving choices facing a
protagonist“.
Conflict is the problem or struggle of the characters have
to solve or come to grips with by the end of the story.Crawford (in Ali, 2014)
says that:“Conflict is the struggle between two opposing forces drives the plot
of most stories, plays, and novels, recognizing conflict is essential to
understanding literature. Conflicts are usually introduced early on in the
plot. They may be obvious two people may be seen fighting, for example or they
may be subtle suggested only by details in description or dialogue. Plot is the
sequence of events in a story. Most plots deal with a problem and develop
around a conflict, a struggle between opposing forces”. (Crawford, 1998, p.
157)
According to
Nurgiyantoro (in Tobuto, 2014), “conflict is the accident that is important,
the essential element in plot development”. Based on these statements, it can
be said that conflict can be main part of a novel in order to make the plot of
the story more interested. It means that, plot is necessary to use and develop
in order to make the story become interested.
Tillett and
French (2006: 200) as cited in Tobuto (2014) stated “conflict is acted out in
the behavior of individuals‟ and groups of individuals”. In the events, there
are some conflict as something cannot separated from our life. Conflict is
appeared as the result something unpleased of in our interaction with another
people. Therefore, we can see that conflict as one important element that
determine a story.
In defining
conflict, Morgan (2014) stated that conflict is the source of tension that
drives all works of literature. While conflict is a key element of stories,
though, not all conflicts take the same shape, occurring both outside and
inside a character's consciousness. From disastrous battles with nature to
fights against evil villains to moral dilemmas, internal and external conflict
provide the templates for a variety of fascinating stories.
Ali (2014)
concluded that conflict is very important in all stories, plays, and novels.
Within a conflict the story will not interest. In the presence of conflict,
will be lead a sense of curiosity us why the conflict happened, why the two
characters were fighting, why they differ, hence we want to continue to watch
or read the story to our sense of curiosity is answered. Conflict is part of
the plot and usually conflict raise at the beginning of the plot.
2.5 Kinds of Conflict
Conflict is a
struggle between opposing forces. There are two kinds of conflict in movie,
internal conflict and external conflict. Internal conflict is a struggle that
takes place in a character's mind is called internal conflict. The external
conflict is a struggle that takes place in character and an outside force.
Fleming (2006) stated that every storyline involves some kind of conflict. It
is a struggle between two forces, but these forces can be either internal
(feelings) or external (physical).
Conflict have some type which we can see in our life. Laelasari (2005 : 141) distinguishes two types
of conflict, external conflict and internal conflict. “External conflict occurs
between one or more characters from outside force and internal conflict is
within oneself, or the character, and not any other outside force”. Intrinsic
element in a novel is the element‟s which directly have a share in develop
building a story and extrinsic element is element‟s residing in outside that
and indirectly influence from a story.
The external
conflict is a struggle that takes place in character and an outside force.
Character may face several types of outside forces. The outside forces may be the another character.
It may be the community. The outside force may also be forces of nature. For example, a story might be the main character strunggling againts the arctic
cold. The internal conflict is a strunggle that takes place in a characters
mind. For example, a character may have to decide between right and wrong or
between two solutions to a problem. Sometimes, a character must be deal with
his or her own mixed feelings or emotion.
Wellek and
Warren in Nurgiyantoro (1956 : 24) the situation of subjektivitas author owning
attitude, confidence, and the life opinion which all the things will influence
the masterpiece which in he wrote. Based on the statement, the opinion live
author very influencing a masterpiece which in he wrote especially in external
conflict. An external conflict is a conflict that can be seen physically. We
know external conflict as character vs. character, character vs. nature, and
character vs. society.
2.5.1 Internal
Conflict
Also known as
person vs. self, internal conflict focuses on a character wrestling with a
major decision.Morgan (2006) stated that internal conflicts can involve an
emotional decision, such as who to pursue a relationship with, an intellectual
choice, such as choosing to believe or reject a truth a character was raised
with or a moral dilemma, which requires a character to choose whether or not to
compromise his ethical standards. In William Shakespeare's "Hamlet,"
Hamlet struggles with when and how to carry out his father's ghost's order to
kill his uncle, who has married Hamlet's mother and usurped his father's
position as king.
Lavanya (2013) also give definition and example of Person vs self conflict. He stated that these
are internal battles that characters wage within themselves; these are internal
issues that affect their actions, motivations and interactions with other
characters. The conflict can be a recurring theme throughout the story or at a
particular point in time. In Julius Caesar, Brutus constantly struggles with
his feeling towards his friend Caesar and his country.
Kate Walker
(2011, p. 41) in Ali (2014) states that “Internal conflict arises from the
character‟s personalities and their reactions to each other. They are usually
emotional in origin and are resolved by learning more about themselves or each
other or discarding inappropriate beliefs”. It concluded that internal conflict
is the problem that occurred in his/her self.
Below are
the examples of internal conflict:Case AddictedAccording
to Floyd P. Garret, M.D addictive
behavior attempts to repair a state of bad feeling but is a Faustian Bargain
that perpetuates it self and
often asks the ultimate price. Addiction can be compared to an unhealthy,
fanatical love. Unnatural and arbitrary hedonic management by substances or
stereotyped processes distorts and cripples the psyche and places the
individual at a grave survival disadvantage.
Addictive behaviors such as smoking,
drinking, drug use, overeating and other "quick fix" maneuvers aimed
at rapidly and dramatically changing the individual’s emotional and hedonic
state are natural and common targets for resolutions of reform. In this case,
case addictive is a behavior that addicted to have a case. The person addicted
to have a case such as addicted by drug or alcohol.
In addition Floyd P.
Garrett, M.D stated
that the addict is double-minded
because he cannot really and truly desire recovery until he already has it.
Recovery is about restoring natural, spontaneous and healthy regulation of mood
and feelings. Because addicts may be seriously impaired in their pre-addictive
self-care and self-management they often require prolonged help learning to
feel well without resorting to the "tricks" of addiction.
Sociopath
Quoted
from medical-dictionary.com, sociopath is a type of anti-social personality
disorder, a condition that prevents people from adapting to the ethical and
behavioral standards of his or her community. Sociopathic individuals can be
dangerous, exhibiting criminal behavior, organizing dangerous cults, and
causing harm to themselves and others.
The main characteristic of a
sociopath is a disregard for the rights of others. Sociopaths are also unable
to conform to what society defines as a normal personality. Antisocial
tendencies are a big part of the sociopath’s personality. This pattern usually
comes into evidence around the age of 15. If it is not treated, it can develop
into adulthood.
It is very rare for a person with
antisocial personality disorder to seek help of their own accord. Treatment for
antisocial personality disorder is usually through group psychotherapy.
Sociopaths
often find it helpful to talk through and recognize their problems with people
they can trust. In a number of cases, this type of personality disorder tends
to diminish from the age of 30 onwards.
2.5.2 External Conflict
Fleming (2014) stated that external
conflict can exist between to characters, like the conflict that exists between
a controlling father and youthful, mischievous son or the tension that occurs
between a virtuous woman and a rogue of a man.
External
conflict can also be the conflict that occurs when a human encounters a
physical challenge. Morgan (2006) wrote 4 categories of external conflict,
below are the explanation of types of external conflict with the examples
Person Vs. Person
Person vs. person is the classic showdown between the
protagonist, the main character of the story, and the antagonist, the character
who tries to bring about his downfall. Throughout the story, the two characters
attempt to outsmart, outdo and outfox each other, resulting in momentary
victories for them both. By the conclusion, though, one must emerge from the
battle as the winner. This external conflict is seen in the "Harry
Potter" books, as Harry engages in an ongoing battle against Lord Voldemort,
who has sworn to kill him because of a prophecy that he will lead to
Voldemort's downfall.
Lavanya
(2013) explained that these sort of conflicts are the most common. Your characters
will be opposed by or will oppose the actions, reactions, motivations of
another character or characters. As a writer you can choose to use this sort of
conflict to provide comic relief to your narrative.
Person Vs. Nature
Person vs. nature finds the story's characters in a struggle
against their external environment. This can involve adverse weather events
like floods or blizzards, supernatural phenomena, disease outbreaks or isolated
locations like deserted islands or remote mountains. Throughout the story, the
characters are often fighting for their lives against these conditions, and the
survivors typically experience drastic changes in their views of life. For
example, Jack London's short story "To Build a Fire" chronicles the
exploits of an unnamed narrator and his dog as they travel the wilderness of
the Yukon Trail.
Lavanya (2013) also wrote about this conflict, he said that
nature serves as the obstacle for characters. You could choose to write a
particular scene around a natural calamity such as a typhoon or tsunami. There
are many stories waiting to be explored because, in my opinion, an
inspirational story
such as the triumph of human spirit over adversity will never go out of
fashion.
Person Vs. Society
In person vs. society conflict, the protagonist is at odds
with a particular ideology or group. Willing to advocate what's right rather
than what's popular, he often must suffer consequences from his position as he
works to change the status quo.
Lavanya (2013) added that these are conflicts where your
characters’ firm beliefs are against norms that the entire society as a whole endorses. It could be social evils or discrimination practiced by society that is opposed by a
minority.
Man Versus Supernatural
Lavanya stated that supernatural elements
are typically those that defy the laws of nature and are beyond scientific
understanding. Such a setting adds gravitas and drama to the story. If you are
using super natural elements you might want to make sure what genre you are
writing in.
2.6 Previous Research
There are some previous researches that
related with this research, they are:
The first is research by Ali (2013) “An Analysis of Conflict in The Clinic”
(A Movie by James Rabbiits). This study aims to
describe conflict in the movie by James Rabbiits, titled The Clinic. It focused on analysis of
external conflicts that occurred between characters. The source of the data was
the utterances or conversations in the movie. Methodology of research was
descriptive method and the study applied library research to collect the data.
In technique of analyzing the data was obtains by identification,
classification, and analyzing.
The
second is research that was conducted
by Chikal (2013). The title is Representation of Conflict in The Film The Bang Bang
Club.
This research
aims to determine the meaning of conflict contained semiotics in the film The
Bang Bang Club, analyze what are the meanings contained in the film The Bang Bang Club, which deals with conflict, which is denoted, the meaning of meaning, myths/ideological according to analysis semiotics Roland Barthes. This research is a qualitative research using analysis semiotics Roland Barthes method. Data collection technique that is used is the study of
library, documentation, study and search data online. A sequence object
analyzed contained in the film The Bang Bang Club by taking five sequences.
The last is research by Agneswari (2011). The title is Conflict
Analysis of Main Character In Steel’s Irresistible
Forces. The aims of the study in this research
are to find out the main character of the novel Irresistible Forces and
to analyze how the main character faces the conflict and eventually solves the
conflict, internally and externally. The focus of this study is the main
character’s conflict as portrayed in Irresistible Forces. The conflict
is about how the main character faces her conflict; her conflict with herself,
her conflict with another individual and also her conflict with society. It is
conflict that makes a story full with intense. How it is started, faced, and
solve it for better solution in order to get wisdom living.
The researcher takes the researches
above as the previous study because has similar topic with this research. The topic of the research about conflict analysis
in a movie so it can be the references for the researcher in conducting this
research. The difference with this research are in the movie that chosen and in the analysis data.
The researcher choose Sherlock Movie in conducting
this research.
CHAPTER III
RESEARCH METHOD
This
chapter discusses about method of research, source of the data, technique of
collecting the data and technique of analyzing the data.
3.1 Method of Research
This research is a qualitative research. The researcher use qualitative method to investigate the
characterization of the major characters on Sherlock movie. Berg in Djam’an and Aan (2009) said that qualitative research thus refers to the meaning, concepts, definitions, characteristics, methapors, symbols and description of things.
Creswell (2012) stated that
qualitative research is best suited to address a research problem in which you
do not know the variables and need to explore. It involves the description,
recording, analysis, and interpretation of conditions that exist. Qualitative
method is the method that required the researcher to describe the data
complexly, analyze certain words, and observe detail report from despondences
and study on natural situation. This research belongs to descriptive
qualitative research, because the data are information about the characterization of major characters. The
characters that will be analyzed are Sherlock Holmes and John Watson.
3.2 Approach
The researcher will use psychological
approach in this research. This approach will be used to determine the conflict
of main character on this movie. Psychological approach aims to analyze and
describe works of literature carefully, detail, and carefully to produce the
overall meaning. It is intended to determine the conflicts of main character.
3.3 Source of the Data
The data will be collected by two sources; they are
primary and secondary data source. The primary data is the main data of
research that taken from the movie. The primary data is the data that the
researcher needs, it is about the characterization of the major characters that
the researcher get from the movie.
The secondary data is the data from books, internet and
literary that will support the primary data. The secondary data is the
supporting data that will help the researcher to conduct this research.
3.4 Technique of Collecting Data
This study is a library research. Library research
is all the work done by researchers to gather information relevant to the topic
or issue that will be or are being investigated. Therefore, data supporting
this study were collected through literature. To collect the data the
researcher will use some steps:
Watching Movie
The researcher will watching the Movie. It is to make the researcher
easily to know how the characterization of the major characters is.
Taking Notes
The researcher will also take note while watching movie.
The researcher will take note about the dialogue that shows the
characterization. Taking notes is important to make easy the researcher in
conducting this research.
3.5 Technique of Analyzing Data
After collecting the data,
the researcher will analyze data that have found. The researcher will use
several steps which are identified as follow:
Identification
The researcher will
identify the data. The researchers identify the characterization of the major
characters that the researcher got. The researcher will identify the dialogue
in the movie that shows the characterization. The researcher focuses on
Sherlock Holmes and John Watson.
Classification
The next step after
identification is Classification. The researcher will classify the data about
dialogue and find the characterization. The characterization will classify into
its categories.
Analyzing
This is the last step is analyzing. The researcher will give explanation the each characterization on the major characters in Sherlock Movie.
CHAPTER IV
RESEARCH FINDING AND DISCUSSION
4.1 Research Finding
The main topic of this research
focus on the major characters conflict. Based on the classification of the
conflict, there are two main types of conflict , namely the internal conflict
and the internal conflict. This chapter will identify and analyze the conflict
of the major character found from Sherlock Holmes movie.
4.1.1 Internal Conflict
Addicted
Sherlock in a genius detective. He became a famous
detective with his best friend, John Watson. The first internal conflict that
had by sherlock is addiction . He always wanted to have a case to break.
Sherlock did the case not for money but because he really need the case because
he was case addicted.Such as the scene below
Data 1
Sebastian : So, some one came up here in the middle of the
night, splashed paint around and left within a
minute.
Sherlock : How many ways into that office?
Sebastian : Well, that’s where this gets really
interesting. Every door that opens in this bank, it gets locked
right here. Every walk-in cupboard,
every toilet.
Sherlock : That door didn’t open last night?
Sebastian : There’s a hole in our security. Find it and
we’ll pay you five figures. This is an advance. Tell me
how he got in. There’s a bigger
one on it’s way.
Sherlock : I don’t need an incentive, sebastian.
Watson : He’s kidding you, obviously. Shall i look after
that for him? Thanks.

Mrs Hudson : What about these suicides then, Sherlock? I
thought that’d be
right up your street. Three exactly the same.
Sherlock : Four. There’s been a fourth. And there’s
something different this
time. A fourth? Where?
Lestrade : Brixton, Lauriston Gardens.
Sherlock : What’s new about this one? You wouldn’t have
come to me otherwise.
Lestrade : You know how they never leave notes? Yeah.
This one did. Will
you come?
Sherlock : Who’s on forensics?
Lestrade : Anderson.
Sherlock : He doesn’t work well with me
Lestrade : Well, he won’t be your assistant.
Sherlock : I NEED an assistant
Lestrade : Will you come ?
Sherlock : Not
in a police car, i’ll be right behind
Lestrade : Thank
you.
Sherlock : Brilliant!
Yes! Four serial suicides, and now a note. Oh it’s Christmas. Mrs Hudson, i’ll be late.Might need
some food.

Data 3
Sherlock : God!
John, I need some. Get me some. No.Get me some.
Watson : No.
Cold turkey we agrred, no matter what. Anyway, you’ve paid everyone off,
remember? No-one within a two mile radius will
see you any.
Sherlock : Stupid
idea. Whose idea was that? Mrs. Hudson!
Watson : Look,
Sherlock, you’re doing really well, don’t give up now!
Sherlock : Tell
me where they are! Please, tell me.
Watson : Can’t
help, sorry. I’ll let you know text week’s lottery numbers.
Sherlock : It
was worth a try. My secret supply, what have you done with my
secret supply? Cigarettes, what have you done with them ?
Watson : I
thought you weren’t my housekeeper.
Mrs Hudson : I’m
not. How about a nice cuppa and perhaps you could put away your harpoon?
Sherlock : I
need something stronger than tea. Seven percent stronger. You
mind, it’s so placid, straight-forward, barely used. Mine’s like an
engine, racing out of control. A rocket,
tearing itself to pieces
, trapped on the launch pad. I nedd the case!
(Eps The Hounds
of Baskerville, Act 00:02:03,040-00:04:28,319)
Sociopath
The next internal conflict
of sherlock Holmes is sociopath. Some people say that Sherlock is a psychopath,
but he always says that he is a sociopath. Such as scene below :
Data 4
Anderson : According
to SOMEONE the murderer has the case, and we found
it in the hands of our favorite psychopath.
Sherlock : I’m
high-functioning sociopath. Do your research.
(Eps
Study In Pink, Act 00:57:48,280 – 00:57:56,280)
Data 5
Watson : You
know he’s actually pleased you’re here ? Secretly pleased.
Lestrade : Is he
? that’s nice. I suppose he likes having all the same faces back together.
Appeals to his. His Asperger’s ?
(Eps Hounds of
Baskerville, Act 00:56:34,120 – 00:56:49,919)
Data 6
Sherlock : I’m
not a hero, i’m a high-functioning sociopath, Merry Christmas!
(Eps His
Last Vow, Act 01:21:38,196 – 01:21:44,236)
Data 7
Sherlock : We met twice, five minutes in total. I
pulled a gun, he tried to blow me up. I felt we had a special something
.
Judge : Miss
Sorrel, are you seriously claiming this man is an expert? After
knowing the accused for just five minutes ?
Sherlock : Two
minutes would have made me an expert, five was ample.
Judge : Mr
holmes, that’s a matter for the jury. Really ?
Sherlock : One
librarian, two teachers, two high-pressure jobs, probably the citty.
The foreman’s a medical secretary, trained abroad, judging by her shorthand.
Judge : Mr
Holmes ?
Sherlock : seven
are married, two are having an affair with each other. just had tea and biscuits. Would you like to
know who ate the wafer
?
Judge : Mr
Holmes! You’ve been called here to answer miss Sorrel’s questions, not to give us a
display of your intellectual prowess. Keep
your answers brieft and to the point. Anything else wil be treated as
contempt. Do you think you could survive for just a few minutes. WITHOUT SHOWING OFF?!
(Eps The Reichenbach
Fall, Act 00:16:29,980 – 00;17:30,700)
Data 8
Sherlock : First
time ever, she’s cleaned up her act, off the booze.
Watson : Nope.
Shut up, Sherlock!
Sherlock : I see
you’ve got a new boyfriend, Molly. You’re serious about him. Sorry, what? You’re seeing
him tonight, giving him a gift. Take a day off.
Watson : shut
up. Have a drink.
Sherlock : surely
you see the perfectly wrapped present in the bag. The others are slapdash. It’s for
someone special. The shade of red echoes
her lipstick...an unconscious association, or one she’s deliberately trying to encourage.
Either way, Miss Hooperhas love
on her mind. That she’s serious about him is clear from the fact she’s giving him a gift. It suggests long – term hopes. That she’s seeing him
tonight is evident from her make-up and clothes.
Obviously trying to compensate for the size of her mouth and breasts.
Molly : you
always say such horrible things. Every time. Always.Always.
Sherlock : i am
sorry. Forgive me. Merry christmas, Molly Hopper.
(Eps The Swap Ripper,
Act 00:42:38,280 – 00:43:47,5190)

scream,then a photograph of m being
taken in for questioning . He wants to destroy me inch by inch. It is a
game, Lestrade, and not one i’m willing to play. Give my regards to sergeant Donovan.
(Eps The swap
Ripper, Act 00:49:36,660 – 00:50:42,940)
Data 11

witnesses.
Watson : so
that’s your source? Moriarty is richard Brook?
Woman : of
course he’s richard brook, there is no moriarty. There never has been.
Watson : what
are you talking about?
Woman : look
him up. Rich Brook, an actor sherlock holmes hired to be moriarty.
Moriarty : Dr.
Watson, i know you’re a good man,don’t, don’t, don’t hurt me.
Watson : No,
you are Moriarty! He’s Moriarty! We’ve met, remember? You were going to blow me up!
Moriarty : i’m
sorry. I’m sorry. He paid me, i needed the work. I’m an actor, i was out of work.
Watson : sherlock,
you’d better explain, because i am not getting this.
Woman : i’ll
be doing the explaining, in print, It’s all here, conclusive proof.
You invented james moriarty, your nemesis.
Watson : invented
hiim ?!
Woman : He
invented all the crimes, actually. And to cap it all, he made up a master
villain.
Watson : don’t
be ridiculous! Ask him.
Woman : he’s
right here. Just ask him. Tell him, richard. For god’s sake, this man was on trial!
Yes, and you paid him to take the rap.
Promised you’d rig the jury. Not exactly a west end role, but i’llbet the
money was good. But not so good he didn’t want to sell his story.
Moriarty : i have
proof. Show them...kitty,show them something. Yeah show me something. I’m on
kids’TV. I’m the story-teller. I’ts on DVD.
Just tell him. It’s all coming out. It’s all over. Just tell them
. just tell them. Tell them!
Watson : it’s
all over now!
Moriarty : no!
Don’t you touch me! Don’t you lay a finger on me!
Sherlock : stop
it now!
Moriarty : don’t
hurt me!
Watson : don’t
let him get away! Can he do that? Completely change his identity, make you the criminal ?
Sherlock : he’s
got my whole life story.
(Eps The Reinchenbach Fall,
Act 00:58:49,900 – 01:01:40,179)

Moriarty : staying
alive! It’s so boring, isn’t it? It’s just staying. All my life i’ve been
searching for distractions and you were the best distraction and now i don’t
even have you because i’ve beaten you.
And you know what? In the end, it was easy. It was easy. Now i’ve got to go back to
playing with the ordinary people, and it
turns out your ordinary, just like all of them. Well. Did you almost start to
wonder if i was real?
Sherlock : did i
nearly get you? Richard brook. Nobody seems to get the joke, but you do.
Moriarty : of
course. Attaboy.
Sherlock : richard
brook in german is reichenbach. The case that made my name.
Moriarty : just
trying to have some fun. Good. You got that too.
Sherlock : beats like digits. Every beat is a one,
every rest is a zero. Binary code.
That’s why all those assassins tried to save my life. It was hidden on me, hidden
inside my head. A few simple lines of computer
code that can break into any system.
Moriarty : told
all my clients, last one to sherlock is a sissy. But now that it’s up here,
i can use it to alter all the records.
Sherlock : but
the rhythm...partita no 1!
Moriarty : thank
you, johann sebastian Bach.
Sherlock : but then
how did you...?
Moriarty : how
did i break into the bank, to the tower, to the prison ? daylight
robbery! All it takes is some willing participants. I knew you’d fall for it.
That’s your weakness. You always want everything
to be clever. Shall we finish the game ? one final act. Glad you chose a tall building. Nice way to do it.
Sherlock : do
it ? do what? Yes, of course.
Moriarty : my
suicide. Genius detective proved to be a fraud. I read it in the paper so it must
be true. I love newspaper. Fairy tales. And pretty
grim ones too.
(Eps The Reichenbach

Conflit with Irene
Addler
Addler is the first
woman that make sherlock interested. Sherlock can not read her behavior. Addler
always make sherlock curiuos about her, because she was different from the
other people. The conflict of sherlock with Addler showed in the scene below :
Data 13
Sherlock : so,
what do you keep on here? In general, i mean?
Addler : pictures,
information, anything i might find useful.
Watson : for
blackmail?
Addler : for
protection. I make my way in the world, i misbehave. I like to know people will
be on my side exactly when i need them to be.
Sherlock : so how
do you acquire this information ?
Addler : i
told you...i misbehave.
Sherlock : but
you’ve acquired something more danger than protection. Do you know what it
is ?
Addler : yes.
But i don’t understand it.
Sherlock : i
assumed. Show me. The passcode.
Addler : it’s
not working.
Sherlock : no,
because it’s a duplicate i had made into which you just entered the numbers 1058. I
assumed you’d choose something more
spesific than that, but thanks, anyway.
Addler : i
told you that camera-phone was my life . i know when it’s in my hand.
Sherlock : oh,
you’re rather good.
Addler : you’re
not so bad.
(Eps The Swap
Ripper, Act 01:04:54,200 – 01:06:11,240)
4.2 Research Discuccion
This part discussed
about conflict of sherlock holmes as the main character in sherlock movie. The
researcher discussed about the internal conflict and external conflict that had
by sherlock holmes in this movie.
4.2.1. Internal Conflict
Morgan (2006) stated
that internal conflicts can involve an emotional decision, such as who to
pursue a relationship with, an intellectual choice, such as choosing to believe
or reject a truth a character was raised with or a moral dilemma, which
requires a character to choose whether or not to compromise his ethical standards. In this movie, the researcher
found 2 conflicts that faced by sherlock holmes as a detective, they are case
addicted and sociopath.
Casse addicted
From the data 1, the
dialogue showed that sherlock did not need money. He broke the case without
hope money. In that scene, Sebastian asked Sherlock holmes to investigate the
codes that paint on the wall. Sebastian will pay him to investigate the case ,
but he refused that, because he is more interested to the case than money.
The dialogue of data 2
showed that sherlock was really happy when Lestrade asked him to handle a case.
The case is about four serial suicides. The police would ask Sherlock help if
they could not break the case. It was the difference between Sherlock and the others
detective.
Sherlock
is addicted by case that dificult to break for other people. He did not interest to the case that easy.
Sometimes Sherlock would refuse the case if he thought that was not interesting
for him. He would like a crazy person if there is no case. The data 3 showed that Sherlock need some cigaretess. He did not have
case to do so he really need it. Watson and Mrs Hudson tried to hide his
cigaretess that called his secret supply. It showed that sherlock is like a
crazy man if he did not have any case . Sherlock said to watson that ‘your
mind, it’s so placid, straight-forward, barely used. Mine’s like an engine,
racing out of control. A rocket, tearing itself to pieces, trapped on the
launc. I need the case!.’. It showed that he really need a case .
Sociopath
The next internal conflict of
sherlock Holmes is sociopath.
In the data 4 Some people
say that Sherlock is a psychopath, but he always says that he is a sociopath.
Look at the dialogue of the data 6 when Anderson said him a psychopath but Sherlock
said that “ i’m high-functioning sosiopath. Do you research”.
The
the data 5 same things with the data 4. Sherlock said when he killed Magnussen. He said that
he is a high-functioning sociopath.
In the data 6 sociopath is a
type of anti-social personallity disorder, a condition that prevents people
from adapting to the ethical and behavioral standards of his or her community.
Sociopath are ussually extremely charming and charismatic. Their personalities
are described as magnetic, and as such, they generate a lot of attention and
praise from others.
In the data 7 the main characteristic
of a sociopath is a disregard for the rights of others. Sherlock did not
understand about other people felling.
In the data 8 showed that
Sherlock said a thing that made Molly hurt. Sherlock did know that Molly like
him. Sherlock said that she got a new boyfriend. Molly was serious about him.
Molly was seeing him tonight, giving him a gift. Take a day off. Sherlock did
know that the gift will be given to him. When he saw his name on a gift,
Sherlock was realized and he apologize to Molly.
4.2.2 External Conflict
Fleming (2014) stated
that external conflict can exist between to characters, like the conflict that
exists between a controlling father and youthful, mischieveous son or the
tension that occurs between a virtous woman and a rogue of a man. In this case,
the researcher found the conflict between sherlock and jim moriarty and also
irene addler .The type of this conflict is person vs person.
Conflict with jim
moriarty
In the data 9 showed that the
taxi driver was sent by Moriarty. Moriarty was interested to sherlock because
of his ability. He chalanged sherlock to know who was better. Moriarty wanted
to play game with him. He always trapped sherlock in a case.
In the data 10 showed that
Moriarty wanted sherlock to follow his game. Moriarty is also a smart man like
sherlock. He chalenged sherlock to enjoy the game that he created. The game was
aimed to destroy sherlock. Moriarty would do anything to play Sherlock. Moriarty
would do anything to play sherlock. He pretended to be the other people when
sherlock and watson found him.
In the data 11 when sherlock and watson found him in a
house. They was really surprised when they know moriarty was the other people.
He pretend to be richard brook. He said that moriarty was a character that
created by sherlock, he was not real. Watson did not believe about that, he was
sure that richard brok was moriarty. The other conflict when sherlock met him
in the roof.
In the data 12 Jim moriarty
knew about Sherlock. He knew that sherlock really interest to his way when he
stole the crown. Such as he said ‘how did 1 break into the bank, to the tower,
to the prison? Daylight robbery! All it takes is some willing participants. I
knew you’d fall for it. That’s you weakness. You always want everything to be
clever. Shall we finish the game ? one final act. Glad you chose a tall
building. Nice way to do it’. Moriarty wanted sherlock to jumped from the
building because he could not answer the way of moriarty to did the crime. But
sherlock had prepare anything. He killed moriarty first.
Conflict with Irene
addler .
The conversation in the data 13
showed that sherlock wanted addler to give the passcode of the phone. One day
sherlock found addler in his bedroom. He was really surprised. Addler told him
that she would be killed by someone.she would give sherlock the code, she
wanted sherlock to know it by his own self.
CHAPTER V
CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION
5.1 Conclusion
The objective of this
research to find out the conflict that faced by the major character in sherlock
movie. The major character analyzed is sherlock holmes. By analyzing the
conflict of sherlock holmes, the researcher found some data of dialogue that
showed the conflict. The conflict was divided in two big categories, they are
internal and external conflict.
Internal conflict is a
conflict that happens in the human itself. It does not involve the other
people. In the movie, the researcher found two internal conflict that faced by
sherlock, the first is case addicted. Sherlock really love being a detective
that supported by his abillity. He did the case because he always curious. He
always need a case without paid money. Sherlock addicted by the case.
The next internal
conflict is sociopath. Many people said that sherlock is a psychopath ,but he
argued that he is a sociopath. Sociopath is a person with antisocial
personality. Sherlock is difficult to make a relationship with the other
people. He disregard to the other people. Sometimes, he said a bad thing about
the people that make the other people do not feel comfortable.
The researcher also
found external conflict in the movie that faced by sherlock . the first
conflist is with jim moriarty. He is a consulting criminal that interest to
sherlock ability. Moriarty wanted to defeat sherlock holmes. He tried to beat
him . one of then is adler. Sherlock also had a conflict with her. She is a
woman that make him curious because he can not read about adler.
5.2 Suggestion
The researcher hoped this research
could be the reference in teaching and learning process. It will give the
reader more knowledge about conflict that appear in the movie especially
sherlock holmes.
The researcher suggest for the next researcher
will be interested to conduct research about this. This research also can be
reference to the further researcher that wants to analyze about the conflict in
the movie. It will give the helpful information that they need i conducting
their research .
